Recycling rebate makes sense for our urban areas – Noone

Fine Gael Senator Catherine Noone has today (Monday) called on Councils in urban areas, including Dublin, Cork and Galway, to include a provision for recycling rebates for plastic bottles and containers which are deposited. She has called on Dublin City Council in particular to introduce a trial scheme which would see 10 cents being returned per glass or plastic bottle recycled.

“In an international context, a number of cities across the world have implemented this successfully, whereby people might get anywhere from 5 cents to 20 cents per glass or plastic bottle returned. The money spent on this rebate is easily offset by cleaner streets which both enhance the reputation of our cities while freeing up Council employees look after other matters.

“I would, therefore, call on Councils across the country to consider this. This is particularly true in the Dublin City Council area, where we have seen highlighted again and again the problems with litter and illegal dumping in the Inner City in particular. This could go some way towards alleviating that.

“Given Dublin City Council had a budgetary surplus coming into this year, I think it’s safe to assume that funding for such a scheme exists. If we set forth even a trial period of three months, allocating 5 cents per bottle, a €30,000 funding package would see over 600,000 bottles being returned. Surely this is something which should be considered, as it’s clear that the results would be both desirable and immediate.”
