I would like to applaud Minister Bruton on today’s launch of the government’s new Regional Action Plan for Jobs.
Many have argued that the economic recovery is a Dublin-only phenomenon which is exactly why this new strategy should be strongly welcomed.
The plan will see €250 million spent over five years – with €150 million going to the IDA to develop infrastructure to attract companies to regions outside of the urban centers.
This strategy is crucial to help revitalize regions which have lagged behind in the recovery whilst stemming the flow of emigration of our young people from regional and rural areas.
When this Government came into office – a commitment to create 100,000 new jobs by 2016, was made. We now look on course to reach that target early. This achievement in turn is a vital stepping stone towards the target of full employment by 2018.
