Fine Gael Dublin Senator Catherine Noone has today (Tuesday) urged the Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar, to release the total figure of children treated for alcohol poisoning in Irish hospitals.
The call follows shocking figures released by Temple Street Children’s University Hospital yesterday showing over 100 children under-17 were treated for alcohol poisoning since 2012.
“The stark increase in Alcohol consumption, especially among young girls and pre-teens, is alarming. I previously highlighted the rising tide of liver disease in young Irish women and men in their mid-20’s and have urged the inclusion of a minimum alcohol policy in the up-coming Public Health (Alcohol Bill).
“Figures released by Temple Street show 22 under-16’s presented with alcohol poisoning last year. Five in the last three years were as young as 12 and one was 11. Over 70 of the overall figure of 114 since 2012 were girls. As shocking as these statistics are, they only represent admissions from one facility alone. I urge the Minister to release the total figure of Irish children admitted to hospitals with alcohol poisoning. The full extent of the situation needs to be revealed and tackled head on as a matter of urgency.”
