Weekly Update

This Week In The Seanad – This week in the Seanad, we debated the Sport Ireland Bill 2014 as well as debating the Report on Seanad Reform, Statements on Europe Day as well as Statements on the Spring Statement. You can read more here: http://catherinenoone.ie/2015/05/07/this-week-in-the-seanad-44/

Ireland To Become Most Obese European Country By 2030 – For much of my term in the Seanad, I have been warning of the obesity timebomb which Ireland faces. This will pose huge strains on our medical services as up to 89% of Irish men are projected to be overweight or obese by 2030. These figures illustrate a stark reality that we face, and we must work to ensure this doesn’t happen – http://catherinenoone.ie/2015/05/07/who-report-on-obesity/

Europe Day: Brexit? Grexit? Challenges Ahead – Today as Seanad spokesperson on European Affairs, I welcomed the Minister to the House to discuss Europe Day, the European Commission’s plans for 2015, and the difficulties that lie ahead for both Ireland and Europe in the context of a potential British exit from the European Union, commonly referred to as Brexit, and a potential Greek exit from the Union, commonly referred to as Grexit – http://catherinenoone.ie/2015/05/07/europe-day/

Seanad Reform – This week we debated the recent Report on Seanad Reform. A number of interesting proposals have been put forward as part of this reform package. This includes the overhaul of Seanad panels, a widening of the franchise to allow panels be elected by the general public as well as Irish abroad who hold an Irish passport, and a variety of other reforms. You can read my thoughts on these panels here – and I am conscious that, whatever reform is undertaken, we work to ensure that the Seanad is both representative and reformed responsibly: http://catherinenoone.ie/2015/05/07/seanad-reform/

Kind regards.

Yours sincerely,
