I have called on the Minister for Education, Richard Bruton, the Minster for Health, Simon Harris and the Minister of State for Health Promotion Marcella Corcoran Kennedy to come together to tackle the epidemic of childhood obesity.
I have long highlighted the dangers of the growing childhood obesity problem in Ireland. The World Health Organisation has predicted Ireland is on course to be the fattest country in Europe by 2030 and currently1 in 4 children are overweight or obese. This is an alarming trend and we must all come together to tackle this huge problem.
There are many ideas that could now be explored. Minister Harris has already stated that he wants to improve hospital food by making it healthier; I believe such an approach should also be introduced in relation to food provided in schools.
I also believe in educating children on the importance of healthy food and it is my strong view that this should be included in the school curriculum for all students.
I am now calling on all Ministers to join forces to confront this epidemic among our young people and come up with real, workable solutions.
