End the Use of Plastic on Fruit and Veg Now

I have called for the complete elimination of unnecessary fruit and vegetables in supermarkets.

The level of plastic waste being produced through supermarkets has reached an untenable point. We should strive to become an international leader in the fight against plastic.

To do this we will need to change our attitudes across society and business.

Regrettably, repeated calls on supermarkets to act upon their own initiatives have not been enough to make a significant impact on the industry.

Consumers are also aware of the needless packaging and its effect on the environment. There exists no sufficient reason why the vast majority of plastic packaging on fruit and veg cannot be eliminated.

Continued inaction on the industry’s behalf will only lead to greater environmental damage and the need for legislative intervention.

While legislation on this issue will not solve the wider environmental problem, it will allow us to get on with the larger environmental issues facing Ireland.
