Introduce Mandatory Sentencing for Burglars

INTRODUCE MANDATORY SENTENCING FOR BURGLARS
– 5 YEAR SENTENCE FOR 2nd BURGLARY CONVICTION.
– 8 YEAR SENTENCE FOR 3rd BURGLARY CONVICTION.
– 10 YEAR SENTENCE FOR AGGRAVATED BURGLARY.

I have called for mandatory sentencing for repeat burglars and will seek to introduce legislation to that effect.

The people of Ireland are living in fear and need tangible reassurance regarding the protection of their families. It’s time these thugs realize that waging war on Irish society will lead only to one consequence. As legislators we need to have backbone and grit in facing up to people who strike fear in the hearts of people, especially very vulnerable older people, throughout the country.

By introducing a 5 year mandatory sentence for an individual convicted for burglary on a second occasion, 8 years for third conviction and a mandatory 10 year sentence for anyone convicted of an aggravated burglary, we will send a message to these thugs that this will no longer be tolerated and their actions will have consequences.

This issue requires draconian measures to address this scourge. We must say what we mean and mean what we say and the message is that we will not tolerate this behaviour any longer.

The intimidation needs to stop and people need to feel assured that the law will provide for their safety. Burglary, often targeted at isolated or vulnerable people, even if not violent in nature, causes significant trauma to a victim. The psychological damage and fear victims endure in the aftermath, warrants a strong response from the courts.

We must shift the culture of fear onto the criminals and away from innocent, law abiding people.

Mandatory sentencing for burglaries will allow us to deter individuals from engaging in a crime that tears at the fabric of our society and sows fear and distrust in our communities.
