1,000 Irish people a Month are Diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes- Time for Legislative Action

1,000 Irish people a month are now being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes – statistics from the National Screening service show. The current figures as ‘completely unacceptable.’

Currently a quarter of a million Irish people are living with diabetes and between 85 and 90% of these have type 2. Type 2 is more commonly brought about by lifestyle choices and more recent figures show that an alarming number of close to 900,000 are at risk of developing this life-altering condition, due to the ever rising number of Irish people who are in danger of becoming overweight or obese.

But it doesn’t have to be that way – according to a recent report by the World Health Orgnaisation entitled: The Health Evidence Network Synthesis Report: research has shown the positive properties of adopting a healthy Mediterranean and New Nordicin diet, which have protective effects against type 2 diabetes.

The report found that a total of 15 countries in the European Region currently recommend or implement policies based on the New Nordic and Mediterranean diets, emphasizing the health benefits. Meanwhile, in a bid to tackle type 2 diabetes, the Australian Government are proposing legislation regarding mandatory front-of-pack food labelling, regulating junk food advertising and better oversight of food reformulation

According to Dr. Eva Orsmond – type 2 diabetes is completely preventable and reversible through healthy, low calories diet and exercise. If 10% of type 2 diabetes patients on insulin reversed their condition, we could save at least €140m a year.

Most action taken on NCDs and type 2 diabetes have been education-based and voluntary rather than policy based  -but these measures are simply not effective enough. I have previously called for the regulation of food advertising and labelling and I am now calling for the legislation to ensure the better oversight of food reformulation. Tackling the scourge of Type 2 Diabetes must among top priorities!
